zWORKS entrepreneur’s app streamlines event security

With safety and security among top issues for meeting planners, according to the International Association of Venue Managers, a Carmel entrepreneur has created an app to help event planners and operators quickly respond to a variety of potential issues, ranging from a lost child to an active shooter.
Playbook is the first product launched by Jim Martin’s company, Venue Intelligence. The app allows event organizers, venue operators and first responders to quickly share information electronically.
Martin previously helped establish disaster scenario plans for Simon Property Group, which inspired him to create something that could be quickly and easily available.
“When minutes matter, don’t send people running for a binder,” said Martin, whose office is in zWORKS, Zionsville’s coworking space.
The app allows all those involved in an event access to procedures and plans and can immediately be changed and updated so volunteers will quickly know what to do in a situation without having to track down the right person with the right information, Martin said.
“It’s the ability to leverage what we’re all carrying in our pocket,” he said.
Martin drew a parallel to disaster protocols to the last scene of “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” during which the ark is shelved among thousands of artifacts after all the effort to acquire it.
“You do all this work to build policies and procedures, and then you park it,” he said. “The people who need it aren’t even part of that planning process.”
Most of his clients run events, such as the Big Ten Tournament, Indy 500 and the Louisiana Marathon.
