Remains of Carmel man missing since 1996 identified
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office received positive confirmation Sept. 26 on the identity of the human remains found in Montgomery County in May 2013. DNA testing of the remains was able to identify the remains as those of Ennis Craig Roberts from Carmel.
Roberts had been reported missing since November 1996.
John D. Smith who provided information on the location of the remains is currently serving 65 years in the Pendleton Correctional Facility. He was previously convicted of the murder of Mr. Roberts.
Smith was found guilty of murdering Carmel resident Ennis Craig Roberts in October of 2000 after Roberts disappeared in November of 1996, according to court documents. Smith, who was Roberts’ employee, was sentenced to a 65-year prison sentence for the murder and for stealing Roberts’ vehicle, using his credit cards and forging his checks.
Law enforcement was assisted by the Forensic Anthropology Dept. of the University of Indianapolis as well as the Crawfordsville and Ladoga fire departments and an internal affairs investigator for the Indiana Dept. of Correction.
