Playing for Kids: Extra Life 24-hour gaming marathon Nov. 7-8
A celebration of gaming culture will descend upon Indianapolis from 9 a.m. on Nov. 7 through 9 a.m. on Nov. 8 in a 24-hour gaming marathon called Extra Life, as eBash Video Game Center, 6609 E. 82nd St. The concept is simple: raise money for a local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals by playing games.
As Indiana’s only CMN Hospital, funds go directly to Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health. Extra Life harnesses the power of the enormously popular phenomenon of gaming, providing players an opportunity to give.
Organized locally by the Extra Life Indy Guild which includes many grateful Riley family connections, this local gaming enthusiast club has a goal of registering 1,000 players in hopes of raising $100,000 for Riley. Money can be raised in two ways: Remotely, with players participating in any game on any platform with anyone they want for 24 hours. Registration for the remote event is directly at the Extra Life website. Or, funds can be raised by attending the 24-hour gaming marathon at eBash Video Game Center, located at 6609 E. 82nd Street, Indianapolis, Ind.
The eBash event includes unlimited access to games of all types (video, board, card, etc.) as well as drawings for prizes and food from local restaurants. Details for the event are on the Indy Guild’s Facebook page. (Participants can register at the door.)
Since 2008, players have raised more than $14 million, $6 million of which was raised in 2014 for 170 CMN hospitals. In Indianapolis, the 2014 Extra Life Indy Guild event raised $73,550 for Riley and included 811 registered gamers.
“I am going to be an Extra Lifer for life,” stated Oliver Wojtyna, public relations coordinator for the Extra Life Indy Guild, and a Riley dad. The guild is a local group of gamers founded in February 2014. “I am going to volunteer to make this organization as astounding as possible,” stated Wojtyna.
Extra Life donations for Riley Hospital will be accepted through Dec. 31.
