Paint with a Twist in Carmel to host Marriage Equality Night
The Carmel City Council chambers were recently packed with hundreds of people expressing their opinions on a new anti-discrimination ordinance that would provide new protections to gay and lesbian groups.
By sheer coincidence, Painting with a Twist is hosting a Marriage Equality Night on Saturday Aug. 22.
At the event, people can paint on canvasses while enjoying wine. The painting they will be working on is a tree with rainbow colored leaves. The event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. for $35 at their location at 301 E. Carmel Drive.
Owner Jeanne Shirley said the event was already planned because it was successful at Painting with a Twist franchise locations across the country.
“We are an extremely diverse group across the country,” Shirley said. “This was something that was gaining ground across the country to support Marriage Equality. So I just put it on and then everything just blew up. So it wasn’t in response to anything at all. Of all things, it’s this week.”
Shirley said she supports the anti-discrimination ordinance. It’s not just the rainbow paintings but religious paintings were displayed as well.
“Everyone is welcome,” she said. “We support equal rights here.”
Shirley said she doesn’t think anyone should be offended by the painting.
“It’s a rainbow and a tree,” she said. “Honestly, it can mean anything to anyone.”
