      For Current in Carmel

Carmel Drive will close at Keystone Parkway on or after Thursday, April 1st for construction of the roundabout interchange. After 30 days, Carmel Drive traffic can access Keystone only in a right in / right out configuration. This will continue for approximately 120 days before the interchange opens. Four lanes of traffic on Keystone Parkway will be maintained during construction of the Carmel Drive interchange. Subsequent news releases will be issued before each of the traffic pattern changes occur.

To ensure that those living and working in close proximity to the construction are aware of the upcoming road closure, residents and businesses in the affected area have received a postcard via direct mail. The postcard outlines the closure periods and provides detour maps of the Carmel Drive area. A similar postcard will be sent prior to the closures beginning at Main Street and Keystone Parkway. To view the detour maps online, click here, scroll down to the Intersection Detour Maps section and click on the Carmel Drive Intersection link.

Motorists are asked to use extreme caution in this area for their safety and the safety of construction workers. A 40 mile-per-hour speed limit is in effect and will be enforced in this construction zone along with the entire Keystone Parkway corridor from 96th Street to US 31.

The Carmel Drive interchange is part of the final phase of a three-year project to lower the grade of Keystone Parkway under six major interchanges along the five-mile stretch. When completed, the north-south traffic on Keystone Parkway will be free-flowing with no traffic lights between 98th Street and 146th Street, and tear-drop shaped roundabouts interchanges will manage the east-west traffic flow.

Do you want an ultra high speed internet connection?

You could have access to one if Google selects Carmel/Westfield as a test site to install ultra high speed broadband network community wide. This would be about 100 times faster than most Americans have access to (more than 1 gigabit per second).

Here is how you can help:

Send us your 30 second video showing Google why they should install the high speed fiber in Carmel/Westfield. How would you benefit? How would your family benefit? How would your community benefit? Be creative, make it fun and keep it family friendly! DEADLINE – FRIDAY, MARCH 26.  Click this link to upload your video response.  http://www.youtube.com/user/CarmelWestfieldFiber

116th St. at Keystone to open tomorrow

116th Street at Keystone Parkway has been closed since March 3 due to construction, but the road is expected to be fully open sometime tomorrow.
Keystone Project Manager Jeremy Kashman said he did not know what time the road would become open, as crews still have a few hours of striping and cleanup work to finish before that can happen. He guessed that the change would occur later in the day, but said there was no reason to expect that it would happen any later than Thursday.

They're contractually obligated to get it open tomorrow,” he said. “If they have to work until midnight, they will. There's a penalty if they don't get it open tomorrow.”

Marsh releases statement on closing of O'Malia's at 136th and Meridian

Marsh released a brief statement on the scheduled March 26 closing of the Joe O'Malia's Food Market.

"As a matter of good business, companies must continually review, analyze and improve to remain competitive in today’s challenging environment.  In this particular situation, we had the added challenge of a lease about to expire.
This being said, we made the difficult decision to close the store, this decision was not made lightly and we do understand the impact on the community as well as the lives of our associates.  We are working diligently to place these employees in another of our locations.
We are grateful for the customers who we have had the privilege to serve over the years and offer to those customers the opportunity to shop our Marsh location at 1960 E. Greyhound Pass or any other convenient Marsh location."

Brainard to ask council to approve $213,500 for sculptures

One of the issues that will be discussed at tonight’s City Council meeting is the disbursing of arts fund monies to pay for the latest sculptures to be located in and around the Arts & Design District.

Mayor Jim Brainard has requested the council to disburse $213,500 from the arts fund to cover the latest installment of sculptures by John Seward Johnson, Jr. Tonight, the council will approve or reject the payment that is the obligation of a contract that has already been established.

Council President Rick Sharp wrote in his proposal to add this resolution to tonight's agenda that the ordinance's purpose "is very important to fulfilling the contractual obligations of the city and any further delay would be injurious to the interests of the citizens."

      Seward Johnson is a
renowned artist known for his life-size bronze statues which are present throughout the country.  The “King Lear” statue located on Michigan Avenue, downtown Chicago, and the “Unconditional Surrender,” found on Times Square, New York City, are both Seward Johnson statues.
Ten such statues have been purchased for the Arts & Design District, including “The Awakening,” a 70-foot sculpture which has graced Washington, D.C., for almost three decades.

Sharp said he believes that the statues are a great addition to the community and that groups of people actually visit the city of Carmel solely to observe these famous sculptures. He added that people some people may not like personally like the art, but the city has a plan for them with which it plans to follow through.

“The bottom line is that they are very popular statues done with a plan in mind, which is to have the largest outdoor museum collection of this particular type of Seward Johnson works,” he said.
