Girls on the Run Hamilton County will host its inaugural 5K to bring together girls, their families and community to celebrate the end of the three-month long character-building program. The run/walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 16 at Saxony in Fishers.
GOTR teaches life skills to girls in third through eighth grade with interactive lessons and running games. Each three-month session culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K running event. In past years, GOTR has been a part of a variety of different 5K races. Thanks to the support of sponsors, volunteers and the community, GOTR will now host its own event.
“The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness,” stated Hollie Nicholson, co-founder of GOTR Hamilton County and GOTR 5K race director. “That accomplishment comes in all flavors and everyone who participates – whether they run, walk, hop, skip or cartwheel across the finish line – is to be honored and congratulated.”
GOTR Hamilton County, which is part of the international nonprofit program, began with 15 girls at one school, and four years later has grown to include nearly 200 girls annually. This fall, GOTR is offered at six elementary and intermediate schools in Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield. The organization is working to expand and include more schools throughout the county.
The Nov. 16 GOTR 5K will wind through Saxony Corporate campus and the residential district ending at Saxony Park. While the race begins at 9:30 a.m., there will be pre-race activities, including face painting and warm up exercises beginning at 8:30 a.m.
To register, visit www.gotrhamiltoncounty.org. Early registration through Oct. 31 is $25. Race-day registration is $30. There also is family registration of $75 for families of four or more. There is no charge for children 5 and under. Participants will receive a GOTR 5K shirt and refreshments following the race.
