If you seek real world experience and want to hit the ground running in an internship, Current Publishing is the place for you. Our weekly and monthly papers are focused on our readers, and serving our close-knit and exceptional communities. If you want to work hard, grow as a journalist, and do more than get coffee, consider applying for one of our internships.
Each semester, Current Publishing hires three interns to assist with our various publications. We produce the Current in Carmel, Current in Westfield, Current in Noblesville, Current in Fishers, Current in Zionsville, Current in Geist and also the Carmel Business Leader. Our internships are unpaid but you can receive school credit. The bigger benefit is that the experience you’ll gain will be invaluable for your future in journalism. You’ll be able to add a variety of news length and feature length clips to your portfolio, and will get the opportunity to participate fully in the production cycle. Past interns have gone into a variety of publications and communications positions.
At Current Publishing, you’ll actively be building clips covering news and features in growing and important communities in Indiana. As an intern, you’ll be expected to cover your assigned beats, but will certainly be able to write on a variety of subjects. Local news, arts, education, people, politics, and city events are all examples of the things we want our readers to be exposed to. But even with the wide variety, we won’t limit your ideas and want to hear our interns’ original and creative story suggestions.
Requirements for Editorial Intern:
- Talented journalism, communication, or English student with ability to write creative, clear copy.
- Previous experience at a publication or paper preferred (freelance, school papers, internships, etc…)
- Fact-checking skills, attention to detail, practice & knowledge of AP Style
- Strong reporting/interviewing skills
- Ability to write copy under deadline and multi-task many jobs
- Willingness to learn, initiative to take on stories and new challenges, and desire for real world experience and to exceed expectations

Design and Photography Interns
Current Publishing seeks a budding photojournalist and capable design intern. In addition to being a regular staff photographer and managing various photo assignments, you’ll also be assisting in the design process for our various papers. Our goal as a paper is to continue to deliver interesting photography that adds dimension and narration to our print content, and can also stand alone in online photo galleries and blogs. Imagining interesting photographs for stories and helping to design how a story should look from an idea to print is an integral part of this internship. For design, we expect an intermediate to advanced level with the program In-Design and an ability to plan ahead and meet rigorous deadlines.
Qualifications for Design and Photography Intern
- Art student focused in design and/or photography
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of In-Design and Photoshop
- Ability to take initiative and complete assignments on deadline
- Availability for 4-5 days per week, full time, or hourly equivalent.
- Creative pitches for design
- Ability to imagine and communicate photo art for stories and capture meaningful images for stories
