Create for a Cause to supply backpacks for kids in need

Jacqueline Wilson hopes she is creating a fun event for kids that will benefit other young people in need.
Wilson’s nonprofit organization, Monkey Do Project, is hosting “Create for a Cause,” billed as a fun family event that helps others from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at Cool Creek Park Nature Center in Carmel. Participants will decorate backpacks for children in need.
“This is the first time we’ve done a local kind of decorated backpacks to help the kids,” said Wilson, a Westfield resident. “The kids that sign up will get two backpacks, little canvas backpacks that they can decorate. We’ll have all the supplies there. You can decorate one for a child in need and one to take home or you can donate both for a child in need. We’re going to fill those backpacks with goodies such as gloves, toothbrush and toothpaste packs, toys and healthy stuff to give to them for the holiday.”
Wilson, the founder and executive director of the Monkey Do Project, said her 501C3 charity provides supplies for families in Appalachia.
“Backpacks are going to go kids in West Virginia where the flooding happened in June,” Wilson said. “They are still dealing with a lot of devastation in that area. Even the infrastructure with the roads being closed, there are only a few grocery stores in the area and people can’t get out. There’s a lot of need in that area.”
The charity works with organizations, such as social services and other charities, in West Virginia to provide help.
Wilson said children also will be able to decorate holiday cards and crafts to send with the backpacks. Fun photo opportunities and festive snacks will be available as well.
Wilson said the event is a great way to teach families about giving back during the holiday season. Wilson said she is hoping for 100 participants, which would be capacity.
There are $5 and $10 donation ticket levels. The donations will be used to purchase items. For more, visit eventbrite.com/e/create-for-a-cause-a-fun-family-holiday-event-that-helps-others-tickets-28616732417.
