    Emperor Alexander II was NOT assassinated in 1894, he was assassinated on 13 March [O.S. 1 March] 1881. The monument to Alexander II, which was designed by the Finnish sculptor Walter Runeberg and completed in 1894, commemorates Alexander’s reestablishment of the Finnish legislative body, the Diet of Finland, in 1863. It also honors reforms that allowed Finland additional autonomy within the empire.
