The Warehouse in Carmel echoed with the musical talents of Sophia Joelle Petts on Oct. 11. Surrounded by family, friends and fans, Sophia celebrated the debut of her new EP, “Other Side of My Soul.”

Petts is a freshman at Zionsville Community High School and has released three singles from the EP prior to the event. The local singer/songwriter, along with her co-writer and mentor, Hunter Smith, wrote all of the songs. Thom Daugherty, producer at AGITPROPER studio in Carmel, produced the EP.

“It astounds me that she already brings this much talent and vision to the table,” Daugherty said. “We’ll all be talking about her someday.”

The debut event featured other talented musicians from the area as well. Jon Klaasen of Greenwood, a friend of Petts’, opened with a couple of his own original pieces. Klaasen, 17, and his boy band performed on the X-factor, and he is in the process of working with Daugherty as well.

In addition to her voice, Petts’ stage presence helped listeners find meaning in the tunes.

“I want everyone to be able to connect with the songs,” Petts said. “It’s an EP that came from me and it’s really authentic and real.”

Petts’ was accompanied by Zach Salerno of Carmel High School on drums, Justin Blanner of Hamilton Southeastern High School on guitar and Jansen Hogan of Anderson University on keyboard. Both Salerno and Blanner play in the band Nanook & the Weightlifters, and Hogan released his EP this past spring.

Petts said she hopes that her music and message will have a broad reach.

“I want to be successful being known without being glorified,” Petts said. “People don’t think of Taylor Swift as a real person, and I want people to connect with my music because they know I am real.”
