Free shredding event is June 20 in Carmel

Protect your identity with help from Comprehensive Retirement Solutions, a full-service financial planning firm. They will be hosting a free, confidential document shredding event on June 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at their main office at 11595 North Meridian St. in Carmel.

This shredding event is open to the community and highlights the importance of protecting private information. Last year, the Federal Trade Commission got nearly 160,000 identity theft complaints or 100,000 more than in 2013.

“We take private information very seriously and want to help others do the same. People should take advantage of this free event to destroy any information that could jeopardize their financial future or their retirement planning,” Comprehensive Retirement Solutions President, Michael Fields said.

The financial industry produces a massive amount of paper due to industry regulations. After receiving multiple pieces of mail a week people end up with full mailboxes and have difficulty finding ways to dispose of it properly.

“I know someone whose identity was stolen and their social security was used for benefits. They went through hell and back trying to prove their identity. It highlights the importance of protecting your information,” Fields added.

This event will be a perfect opportunity for people to get rid of unwanted paperwork, bills, statements, documents, credit card offers and personal information in a safe and efficient manner. CRS has contracted PROSHRED® Security to destroy your documents as you watch. Once the documents are shredded the paper remains will be recycled.

Additional vendors at this event include, the United States Postal Service Inspectors office, raising awareness regarding information that should always be shredded or kept.

Even if you think documents are okay to throw away without proper disposal, it’s always good practice to shred anything that has your personal information to avoid identity theft. Below are the suggested retention guidelines for confidential documents according to irs.gov:

  • Annual tax filing for the organization (IRS form 990) & Payroll registers – permanent
  • Filings of fees paid to professionals (IRS form 1099) – 7 years
  • Payroll tax withholdings, Earnings records, Payroll tax returns & W-2 statements – 7 yrs
  • Bank Statements & Credit Card Statements – 3 years
  • Estate Records – 3 years past tax filing year
  • Utility Bills – 3 years
