Carmel begins Young Farmers Market

The Carmel Farmers Market is beginning a new program this summer to help accomodate many parents’ requests to offer their children a stand at the market to sell items grown in a home garden.

Beginning June 1, the third week of the market, a space will be set aside for the Young Farmers Market. Each Saturday, one of the market tents will be set up in the circle next to the CFM Committee tent. Tables will be installed in the tent to accommodate a maximum of nine children.

“We wanted to help children understand better how farmers make their living,” said Deborah Schmitz, vice president of the market and chair of its Vendor Relations Committee, “And, we wanted to provide an outlet for products that kids have grown themselves. We think it will be fun and educational for all concerned.”

To participate children must be between the ages of 5 and 12; have a signed parental consent form; and have a guardian or parent able to be with them from the opening bell of the market until they sell out of their product.

Reservations can be made each week beginning on the Wednesday before the market by calling 710-0162 or by sending an email to info@carmelfarmersmarket.com. Depending on demand for the spaces, it may become necessary to limit participation to two weeks per child.

The Carmel Farmers Market, now with 65 vendors, is beginning its 15th year on May 18. The season will run every Saturday from 8 to 11:30 a.m. through Oct. 6. The market is located on Center Green next to the Palladium. Parking is adjacent in the parking garage of the Center for the Performing Arts.

Carmel Farmers Market is a nonprofit corporation produced and managed by volunteers.
